Spirituality is the belief that there is more to life than the material world, that there is a greater force running the Universe than purposeless and random mechanics. It is the quest to understand mysteries that we can’t see or explain with our mind, and it answers the deep human thirst for meaning, peace, mystery, and truth.
The term “spirituality” has evolved and expanded over time, and it is difficult to pinpoint a single definition. Nevertheless, there are some common elements that can be identified in the literature. These can be separated into cognitive and experiential aspects. The cognitive or philosophic aspects include beliefs and values, and the experiential or emotional aspects encompass feelings of hope, love, connection, inner peace, and support.
In other words, it is the process of awakening from the ego to a higher consciousness. This can be achieved through meditation, prayer, yoga, or any other practice that allows us to expand our minds beyond limitations and the shackles of our fears, worries, and nonstop thinking. It can also be achieved through a more conscious relationship with your environment, or by serving others and making a difference in the world.
While everyone’s spiritual beliefs are unique, a common theme is that the ultimate truth is love. This understanding helps to eliminate the differences that separate us from each other and creates a sense of unity and community. As you walk your own spiritual path, you will likely incorporate some of these core beliefs into your practices.
