Spirituality is a way of life based on the belief that there is more to life than what meets the senses. It includes beliefs in a higher form of intelligence or Consciousness running the universe, and life after death.
It is a worldview that is rooted in an intense thirst for meaning, peace, mystery, and truth. It is often found in different religions and traditions.
Historically, spirituality has been associated with many forms of self-improvement. These self-improvements can include a turn toward a higher power, the search for a higher purpose in life, and the development of personal values.
A common denominator for the various concepts of spirituality is transcendence. Transcendence, in the psychological sense of self-improvement or a turn toward a higher power, has been linked to decreased stress reactivity and increased feelings of well-being (Heszen-Niejodek & Gruszynska, 2004; Kraok, 2009a).
Becoming more spiritual can be an easy and effective way to enhance one’s well-being. This can be done through increasing hope, kindness, self-compassion, gratitude, and awe.
Spirituality is a practice and can be achieved through various methods, including meditation, prayer, and other esoteric practices. These can improve one’s emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. Ultimately, spirituality promotes healthy living, as it increases resilience to stressful situations and helps people form connections in troubling times. It can also help reduce anxiety, depression, and stress reactivity.
