The word Entertainment derives from the Latin intertenere, meaning “to hold inside.” The root ten is also the same as in the Indo-European word for stretch, a term which might be used to describe the way certain familiar forms of entertainment have demonstrated the ability to transform and adapt across different media.
Generally, the word entertains conjures up images of fun and laughter. However, the act of entertaining can take on a more serious and important dimension, such as in ceremonial functions or religious festivals. As the form of entertainment evolves, it can be adapted to suit an individual who selects private entertainment from an immense array of pre-recorded products; to banquets adapted for two or many people; to performances intended for thousands of people.
