The meaning of spirituality is subjective and can vary widely. Those who identify as spiritual may or may not be religious, but they often feel a connection with something bigger than themselves and seek inspiration, reverence, awe, and meaning in their lives. They also often believe in karma, the principle that what you think, say, and do has an effect on your future.
A spiritual person understands that we are more than just bodies, that we have a soul and unlimited potential. They know that the world has no boundaries or walls and that everyone is connected to love. This understanding inspires them to act with compassion and kindness towards others, regardless of their differences.
Many people, including those who consider themselves nonreligious, struggle to integrate a spiritual perspective into their daily lives. They may believe in a higher power or a divine purpose for their existence but find it difficult to make this belief congruent with their work, family, and social life. They are influenced by a culture that glorifies materialism and lacks appreciation for the immaterial dimensions of our existence.
In response to this, the field of secular spirituality has emerged to help people reconcile their everyday lives with their spiritual beliefs. Unlike traditional religion, it focuses on values and ethics rather than faith and rituals. This allows atheists, agnostics and believers to embrace its messages without risking offending those who don’t share their beliefs. This field has also developed a body of research that shows that the practice of spirituality, through the promotion of gratitude, hope, self-compassion, and positive emotions, can reduce stress levels and improve immune function.
